FAQ

Thalassotherapy

What is thalassotherapy?

Thalassotherapy is based on the benefits of mineral-rich seawater and the marine environment, likeseaweed,  sea mud, sand, and sea breeze. Preventive and curativetreatments are built on the principles of hydrotherapy. Rich in mineral salts (calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc.) and trace elements (gold, copper, zinc, silver, manganese, iodine, etc.), sea water is heated (to 31-35°C) to allow the skin’s pores to dilate so that the body can absorb all of these benefits.

How long is a stay in a spa?

Thalassotherapy lasts several days, usually two, four, or six days. One week is ideal for maximum efficiency for the body and mind, with at least three treatments each day.

Who is thalassotherapy for?

Mainly adults, but children can still benefit from some treatments.

Thalassotherapy is tailored to each individual’s needs. We therefore find thalassotherapies for:

       pregnant women

       the elderly

       people who have trouble sleeping

       people with poor nutrition

people undergoing a significant amount of stress

       people in cancer remission

What is the difference between seaweed and sea mud?

Seaweed contains concentrated active ingredients from the sea, like trace elements, vitamins, and mineral salts. In fact, there are up to 100,000 times more of these ingredients in seaweed than in sea water!

Brown algae, also known as laminaria, is rich in trace elements, which account for up to ¼ of their weight. Each gram of this type of seaweed also provides 800 mg of calcium. A feast of benefits for your skin, they immerse your skin with minerals.

Rich with trace elements and negative ions easily absorbed by the body, warm sea mud is known for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. They protect against rheumatism and provide deep muscle relaxation.

Our sea mud comes from the Mont Saint-Michel bay.

Special Cases

Are there any contraindications?

We recommend a medical check at the start of your stay to be able to tailor the treatments to your needs. Thalassotherapy has some contraindications: severe fatigue, iodine allergy, infectious diseases, skin diseases (excluding psoriasis), cardiac disease, acute cancer, endocrine disorders, and acute psychiatric disorders.

Can pregnant women receive treatment?

Yes. It is beneficial to prepare calmly for your baby’s arrival and take care of yourself. La Thalasso prenatal therapy is given only during the second trimester of pregnancy, after consulting with a doctor (medical note required), and includes gentle treatments, such as water aerobics and sophrology.

Are the therapies not advisable for people with progressive cancer?

Thalassotherapy plays an important role on both the mind and the body, so it is very possible that a therapy may be prescribed. Therapy provides significant relaxation and revitalisation. Massages and jet showers will be avoided on areas affected by the cancer. We will opt instead for very soft treatments that will not cause unnecessary fatigue.

What about post-cancer treatments?

Dr. El Abbadi (La Thalasso physician), Joris Dargazanli (osteopath), Christophe Fosseur (physiotherapist and sophrologist), and Isabelle Boivin (massage therapist, registered nurse, and naturopathologist) work together to create treatments and therapies that can be offered to anyone currently in remission. Available treatments take into account the individual’s physical and mental state.

Is the spa accessible for people with reduced mobility?

Our spa was completely renovated in 2014 to fully accommodate people with reduced mobility. From the entrance, we have an open facility with many accessible rooms.

What do you offer for children?

For children from 3 months to 3 years, La Thalasso offers infant massage by appointment.

Children ages 6 to 16 can enjoy certain thalassotherapy treatments and wellness treatments with a doctor’s note and/or parental waiver. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

What about people with allergies?

During thalassotherapy involving various sea water treatments, you may experience a minor rash, especially if you are severely fatigued. This should go away very quickly, with no additional risk.
